Right away at the bridge where I parked, I spotted some tracks on the ice.
A few yards beyond was opossum number 1. This little runt looked to be in bad shape and was moving quite slowly. It almost looked as if he had fallen into the canal and might have been a bit cold. He looks pretty pathetic:(
On down the trail, I came across opossum number 2. This one was actually licking at something on the ice, but made for a decent, reflective shot.
After I had returned to the truck and heading down the road, opossum number 3 made an appearance on the roadside. This one appeared to be an older one and was very large. To say the least, he was not happy I was there so close.
Two other parting shots from today's hike, and not related to opossums:) The first shot is a squirrel that appears to have its nest tucked away into a honey locust thorn cluster. I'm surprised I even spotted him, but I just got lucky.
And finally, I LOVE old barns. I had never noticed this one before, but it really makes for a nice rustic photo. I tried doing a black and white version, but that old red paint really makes the photo.
All in all, a very fun day. This particular stretch of the canal is very scenic and I plan on visiting it more often. There was a ton of wildlife sign, so it would definitely be a place to visit as the sun rises and sets.

Bill- That last 'possum pic evokes a memory: one night in March I think, a few years ago, I got home from a night class. I got out of the car, and there were no lights on in the driveway. I walked up to the garage door, and JUST as I was picking up my foot to step up on the doorway I heard this horrendous hissing. I think I lost a year off my life, and I bolted backwards. I took out my phone, and there was an opossum huddled next to the house. I had almost literally stepped on it in the dark. They get a bad wrap, and I try to be an advocate for cute and ugly, but I have an aversion to them now!!
Also, fox squirrel?
Hey Alyssa, thanks for commenting! I too, have had a couple of spooky encounters its opossums. One of those was just a couple of weeks ago involving my dogs. All of them and the possum came out fine though. I love opossums, and they are actually quite docile despite the hissing and bearing teeth.
Yes, that is a fox squirrel. I was happy to see him. The grays have chased all the foxies out of my backyard, so I have to head for the country to see them. They sure are cute!
Bill
Nice- they apparently are in range here in Western NY, but I've yet to see one. I love the squirrels!
